Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” What’s the best way to minister to the people at your school? Is it by spitting out Bible verses at them? Is it by telling them all that they’re doing wrong? According to this verse, the best way to shine your light for Jesus is through your example and actions. When people see that you’re different, they wonder why you’re that way. They want to know what’s causing you to be so happy. That is when you can get the opportunity to tell others about Jesus. If someone asks, you can share that Jesus is the reason and also tell them about what He has done for us. Now, it doesn’t always go this far, where people come up and ask you why you’re so different (in a good way). That’s ok, though! God has different ways of using each and every one of us. Imagine you and someone else were debating a topic for a project in class. In order to be prepared, you would have to do some research and make notes to back up your statements and beliefs. This is the same with us, in a spiritual sense. If we don’t read and learn God’s word, how is the Holy Spirit going to use us to defend our faith? When we are challenged and are “debating” with a non-believer, we must know what God’s word says in order to defend our faith. 2 John 1:9-11 says, "Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work." 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 says, "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? (Satan) Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?" As you can see, the Bible tells us that we shouldn't be yoked (linked) together with unbelievers. Referring back to school, I think it's ok to be friends with people who aren't Christians. They’re still God’s children and we must still love them and treat them kindly. I wouldn't be close friends or BFF's, though, because we might be easily tempted to participate in their wicked work. We may not even see it coming! Well, what if you do have close friends who aren't believers? I would first of all try talking to them about Jesus. Some people though, don't want to listen and get annoyed when you try. If that's the case for you, I'd stick to being an influence through your example and actions. If that isn’t you, I’d suggest praying and asking God for the right opportunity to tell your friends about Him. Ask for the Holy Spirit to be with you and guide you so you know what to say. Another idea is inviting your friends to your youth group or to a Sunday service at your church. Another important thing, whether you do or don't have Christian friends, is to learn to say to NO. There will times where you might get asked to do something you know isn't right. We think that if we participate in things that everyone else is doing, even though it's wrong, will make us "cool" and "popular." Trust me, it isn't worth it. Would you rather make Jesus happy or others happy? Overall, I think it's not a horrible thing to have non-Christian friends. Some people can be really nice! Just be careful and remember—even your actions can make an impact in other people’s lives! Thanks for reading my first blog post! I hope that you enjoyed it and gained some insight on being a light for Christ. :)
